The latest film from double Palme d’Or winners the Dardenne brothers won the Best Screenplay award at the 2008 Cannes Festival.
Lorna is an Albanian immigrant who has contracted a fake marriage with Claudy (played by Dardenne regular Jérémie Renier) to obtain citizenship. The Russian Mafia are also involved and Lorna’s conscience is suddenly awakened when she connects with Claudy as a human. But she cannot remove herself from the plot so easily.
This is both a thriller and a deep exploration of a troubled soul graced by remarkable performances from newcomer Arta Dobroshi and Renier.
DVD includes interviews with the Dardenne Brothers and with Arta Dobroshi

★★★★★
Dobroshi gives a terrific performance, as does Renier, making his third appearance in a film by the Dardennes, who once again show themselves to be masters of turning grim social realities into deep explorations of human behaviour.

Its bold intelligence and profound compassion constitute film-making of the very highest order...characteristically audacious and topically relevant...the movie rewards on several levels
Geoff Andrew London Film Festival
Masters of contemporary humanist cinema ...moral...profound...deeply moving... Dobroshi is a revelation

Unclassifiable, accomplished and mysteriously enjoyable.

Peter Bradshaw The Guardian
★★★★
The Silence of Lorna won Best Screenplay at this year’s Cannes Festival but the Dardenne brothers’ latest slice of grim Belgian life could have taken its pick of the prizes. This is a spare and exquisite slice-of-life thriller
James Christopher The Times
You know you're in the hands of masters
